"An abandoned city in the middle of nowhere...but the traces of man still present...the rice to the sky like a skeleton of what was once there…telling us a story about containing life…..but no longer……just empty"
I am fascinated of abandoned cities and buildings…..I want to listen to the walls talking about what was once there, who lived there, what happened there?…if there are any walls left. For me, real excitement is to find a deserted building in the middle of nowhere and be able to get into it and try to create a story with the bits and pieces, traces, I can find there. It is amazing to look into past times….I find it equally scary as I find it interesting and sad. What happened here…why is there no longer life in this building…or is it?
In this work I focused on the main structures of a building… the first to be put up, but the one thing that is left at last if the house or building is left to its deserted destiny, the iron skeleton.
I tried to create a dream city of skeletons….organic buildings in raw materials. I see them as a hybrid between natural and man made. In some of the pieces there is an ongoing process of decay, with salt that digs deeper and deeper in to the material….and maybe it will eventually fall apart. In some of the pieces I work with more surreal structures, with colors and surfaces that create a contrast to the sadness that I find in the abandoned buildings, a dream of hope of a new kind of life.
……what is left….
